Angel Hui Hoi Kiu Hong Kong

Born 1991, Hong Kong
Lives and works in Hong Kong

Karin Weber Gallery artist Angel Hui Hoi Kiu is a Hong Kong-based contemporary ink painter who uses
traditional Chinese motifs and everyday materials in new and innovative ways on tissue paper and rice paper.

By using mundane materials, such as tissue paper, to create something completely unexpected and refined is a challenge that artist Angel Hui Hoi Kiu relishes. By applying Chinese ink on tissue, the artist transforms the nature of a common daily object by applying meticulous brushwork- an ancient practice- to the contemporary and mundane items of everyday life.

By applying Chinese ink on tissue, the artist transforms the nature of a common daily object by applying meticulous brushwork- an ancient practice- to the contemporary and mundane items of everyday life.

Says the artist, “I appropriate various motifs associated with the blue and white porcelain tradition and in so doing redefine the value of it.”

Hui’s works are painstakingly detailed and executed, an approach that gives her works an ethereal quality when applied to her fragile canvases. Hui also works on rice paper.

Hui received a BA (Hons) from Hong Kong Baptist University Academy of Visual Arts in 2014. During her time there, she also participated in an exchange program with Minzu University of China, Beijing, and received a BA in ink painting. She is currently working towards her MA in Experimental Art at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing.
