CLOSE
Karina Wisniewska was an international concert pianist until an accident in 2000 forced her to abandon her international music career.

"Painting is the logical progression of her artistic creativity." On the one hand, retreating into her own four walls and going with the flow until the paintbrush or the spatula in the hand just does it. Out of movement. According to the state of the soul. With or without sketches.
On the other hand, music remains an essential ingredient. Her pictures have titles that refer to musical works. 'I hear the water dreaming,' (for example), a piece by Toru Takemitsu. She loves it, knows every second of it. She has heard it a hundred times, given a great deal of thought to it and so she sees it: thus every painting is also to be listened to. If she knows too little about the composer she does research on the Internet. Then, when she knows all about the work her thoughts tumble out onto the canvas as if it were a film. She works in the cramped studio and tries to achieve the same state of being that was important to her as a concert pianist: "To forget all that I had practised in order to allow the movements to flow freely."

Her lines are allowed to run where they will. No beginning and no end, yet they should interconnect at some point. They dance from top to bottom or across and back again, move, stay still. Warped strokes, hills, valleys. Nets. Lines too, as if scratched on ice by the blade of a skater. Between them, emptiness. A sense of being lost. Her gaps allow one to pause, to draw breath. To take a break. Like the brief intervals on a sheet of music.
Her pictures are modern compositions, in which rigid staves have no place. Beautiful chaos, not always. White on white, acrylic tracks, filled with quartz sand that lies glittering in plastic buckets. Colourless matter; now white lines snake their way across red or black or blue backgrounds. Triptychs, on which the clear lines seem to float away. Haikus, resembling genuine oriental calligraphy, applied with energy and enriched with imagination."
