Artist Statement
After growing up in Hokkaido with its abundance of nature, to encounter the dynamism of a major
metropolis for the first time in my twenties was jolting. There were buildings that towered over me and the light that was emitted from them. In them was the contrast between light and dark. I was simply totally overwhelmed by these man-made things and felt that perhaps they represented the
“negative” that stands opposite to the “positive” of nature.

But the longer I had lived in the city, the more I began to feel uncomfortable with applying this idea towards buildings and light, which is the idea that nature is positive and man-made things are negative. As I gazed at the city, I began to feel a presence that was quiet yet seemingly breathing with great vigor.

I started to feel an energy, even in an environment that was man-made, and this led me to think it was not all was “negative” . What is man-made is created by human beings and those things bring people together. This indeed is a presence, a subtle energy, and I so I now see the correspondence between "nature” and “man-made” as being “movement” and “stillness".
Though subtle, my feeling of discomfort led to fascination, and my imagination began to bloom. Since then, I have begun to create paintings with light, dark and buildings as motifs.
Imagination is brought to those who see light and dark, who then deconstructs past information to
create things of the future within them.

Buildings embody a reality that was built from former visions of the future. They are deconstructed as fragments of the past within us. In my work, I hope to draw lines that connect these fragments.
