An artist residency in Taiwan in 2022 made Frank Tang aware of the Dutch colonial past. Manila Tamarind was introduced to the island by the Dutch in 1600s. The tree in the painting is over hundred years old. It is located in Tainan Park and Tainan was the former capital from 1683 to 1887. Features of Japanese garden design can be seen in the park such as the waterfall.
