A Heart Is A Heavy Burden (Howl’s Moving Castle)
ink and colour on silk
70 × 90cm
The development of “Howl’s Moving Castle” animation by Hayao Miyazaki coincided with the 2003 Gulf War. The central theme of the story is that war is pointless. Humans have no idea why they fight and they have no idea what they are protecting. The protagonist says, “The Heart Is So Heavy.” Because of the curse, the male protagonist devoted his heart to the devil and the power he received was likewise dedicated to the conflict. The picture composition shows the war is over, the castle is leaving the country that started the war.
