Info
I was born in the 1990s in Hong Kong. Similar to most who grew up at that time in Hong Kong, I grew up with corporal punishment. I had no idea what domestic violence meant at the time. “Admitting wrongdoings and accepting punishment” was all that I was told, and its authenticity I have never doubted. As I grew up, I held no grudges against my parents for the pain they put upon me. On the contrary, I have no idea what I would be like without the beating up, whether I would be better off or not.
In today’s society, corporal punishment is definitely inappropriate and needs to be stopped rigorously. However, it is undeniable that the beating has been one of the most profound and unforgettable experiences of my childhood. I’d love to document “a generation of Hong Kong people who were raised by being beaten into shape” through this work. The hanger figures who appear to be dancing in the work are actually people dodging the beating. Looking back, the pain at that time has been diluted over time, and the anger that my parents and I felt at the time has also disappeared. And when we talk about it again, we talk with laughters and smiles on our faces.
