Join us at ‘Hong Kong Marine Reef Fish Biodiversity’, a talk by Stan Shea, Marine Programme Director of BLOOM Association Hong Kong, on Thursday 8th January at 6:30p.m. in our gallery.
Hong Kong may be a small city, but more than 25% of the marine species documented in the whole of China can be found in local waters. Among this incredible diversity are reef fishes, and more than 400 species are known to occur along our coastlines. The 114°E Hong Kong Reef Fish Survey has been documenting the reef fish diversity since 2014, discovering more than 50 species new to local records and identifying areas important for conservation. Joined by hundreds of volunteers over the years, the project aims to not only inform the prioritisation of marine conservation measures, but to also bring our underwater neighbours closer to Hong Kong’s citizens and tell the story of Hong Kong’s marine biodiversity.
Stan was awarded the prestigious 2023 Pew Fellowship in Marine Conservation, which integrates him in an international network of leading marine experts as well as supports his conservation-oriented research on reef fish in Hong Kong. BLOOM, a non-profit organization founded in 2005, whose mission is to preserve the ocean, the climate, marine habitats and species from the root causes of their destruction: extractive activities, especially industrial fishing and oil & gas production.
