Karin Weber Gallery is excited to present ‘Pure Light’ by Udo Nöger’, a selection of new and recent works, with a previously unseen range of works on paper. This artist stands out for his uncompromising, single-minded focus on a single subject: light. Colour is markedly absent from his abstract explorations; instead, a limited palette of greys and whites is employed in the making of Nögers masterful works that appear to glow from within.

At first glance Nögers’ works on canvas appear as paintings, a closer look reveals their elaborate construction. Multiple canvases are stacked on top of each other, every layer selectively painted and treated with paraffin oil to create a translucent, ethereal effect. Each work lets light travel through the canvas layers to draw our eye to what is hidden beneath the surface, often simple, abstract shapes that lend a meditative quality. When experiencing a Nöger work, the viewer begins to focus on the immaterial, the ‘what might be’ rather than the ‘what is’.

A new series of works on paper is dedicated to contrasts – light and dark, sun and shade, whilst Nöger’s recognizable abstract, mantra-like shapes retain a sense of continuity and connection with his well-known canvas series.

This is Udo Nögers third major feature and first solo show with Karin Weber Gallery in Hong Kong,
