Wood whispers its name
You ask me to which family I belong
Beech perhaps
Leaves are pacing on the soil
Meandering tree shadows
Indicate the passage of time
I have no name
Neither have they

Nature, left undisturbed, has never required a spokesperson; hence the concept of environmental protection is something external and man-made. The only thing Nature has ever needed is its own dwelling place. Overdevelopment of our cities, and pollution of water sources, have put the very survival of Nature at risk. Human decisions to fell trees have often been taken lightly, and carelessly forced Nature to adapt to humanity. In the East, people regard wood as a living being, yet objectify it and treat it as a commodity devoid of soul and spirit. If wooden objects were truly ‘alive’, how would they respond to urban development, and how would they react to human behavior? ‘Wood Whispers,’ the latest exhibition at Karin Weber Gallery, imaginatively explores the theme of Nature in a series of interactive, multidimensional artworks by two emerging Hong Kong artists, Carmen Ng and Andio Lai, who specialize in painting and new media art respectively. Their inaugural collaboration is eagerly anticipated, as a fusion of their styles will create some magical visual and auditory experiences. |
